best bark collar 2017 - best bark collar for dogs

Things to consider when buying the best bark collar.

Every breed, and every bark is unique.  There are many things to keep in mind when trying to find the right bark collar for your dog.

The size of a dog is directly related to the size of its voice box.  Large dog breeds have deeper barks that might cause different problems from small dogs that have high pitched voices.

Some collars work by emitting vibrations whenever the dog barks.  The dogs generally do not like the feeling of the vibrations and eventually makes a link between barking and the discomfort of the vibrations.  Eventually the dog avoids barking to avoid the vibrations.

It is important to know that the vibrating collars don’t actually hurt the dog.  They just find the vibrations strange and would rather avoid them.

Another method is through sound.  Generally, it is a very high pitched sound that humans can barely hear, but dogs find it unsettling.  Then, to avoid the sound the dog will not bark.

In the table below I will discuss these and other things to consider when buying a bark collar for your dog.  There is also the material, size and the price to keep in mind.

Here is an exhaustive list of important considerations to keep in mind when you buy a bark collar for your dog.

  • Size

This, I would imagine is a fairly obvious consideration. Right? Since bark collars all work with a type of deterrent, it is important that the deterrent is appropriate to the size of your dog. The static collar for example would have to be stronger to deter a Pit Bull than a Chihuahua.

  • Material

The material that the collar is made of will play an important role in how comfortable your dog will be wearing its collar. Cotton, leather or nylon collars all have different pros and cons that we will explain further on in the article. Just be sure to choose something that is comfortable for your dog to wear.

  • Type of collar (technology): Static/Sonic/Spray

There are three types of collars that we will be focusing on in this article. Static, Sonic and Spray technology. The static collars work by emitting a light static shock whenever the dog barks. The sonic collars emit an annoying sound that disincentives the dog from barking, while the spray technology emits a small amount of bitter citronella oil that also makes the dog more likely to stop barking.

  • Style of the collar

You should always choose a style of collar that suits your dog’s body shape as well as its personality. Harnesses are good for dogs who dislike pressure around their necks, while chokers are good for dogs who need extra discipline.

  • Temperament

The type, and style of the collar you choose for your dog has to suit your dog’s temperament. Dogs that are very active and a bit more difficult to control might respond better to choke collars while dogs with a more neutral temperament will probably do better with harness-type collars.

  • Allergies

Some dogs develop skin allergies from certain materials against their skins. Make sure that you know how your dog will respond to the different materials against its skin before you buy your collar. Also check beneath the collar whether your dog might be developing an allergic reaction over time. If you see a rash on the skin, try to change the material of the collar. Leather, generally speaking, is the most neutral material against sensitive dogs’ skins.

  • Harmful or hurtful collars

Some collars can be aggressive on your dog’s body. Be sure that you buy a collar that only deters your dog from barking, but does not actually hurt your dog. If you have a small dog, make sure that you are able to adjust the shock on the collar to a level that is appropriate to the size of your dog.

  • Personal taste

Yes, of course you have to like how your dog looks in its new collar. There are so many different materials, styles and colors available. Choose a collar that goes well with the color of your dog. Dogs with longer hair, for example, look better with thick collars while short-haired dogs can look great with thin collars.

  • Health Problems

Sometimes dogs are not barking just for the sake of annoying you. In some cases, sudden excessive barking is caused by health issues. If your dog recently started barking a lot more than usual, have it checked out by your vet before rushing to buy a bark collar.

  • Your Budget

Yes, bark collars, like most other things in life come in a wide range of qualities. And you normally get what you pay for. We did, however, try to include some affordable but decent quality collars for those of you who are working on a tight budget but still want a decent quality collar.

In short

These are all very important points to consider when buying your dog’s new bark collar.  As we have seen, there are many different materials, styles and technologies to keep in mind when making this decision.  The most important thing is that you choose a collar that will be effective in deterring your dog from barking while still not actually hurting the dog.

  • Buy a collar that is appropriate to the physical size of your dog.
  • Choose the style of collar that best suits your dog’s temperament.
  • If your dog has any allergies or long standing health issues, please keep these in mind.
  • The technology of the collar — choose a collar with a technology that your dog will respond to, but that won’t hurt your dog.
  • Your own personal financial situation.

What did not make our list:

Zacro DC342 Dog No Bark Collar

This is actually not a bad collar at all.  In fact, it is one of the best-selling bark collars around.  But as we all know, best-selling does not always mean best quality.  The Zacro Bark Collar was updated with improved anti-bark chips that are aimed at a more humane way of addressing a barking problem.

There have been a lot of reports of the collar being activated by external sounds.  This means that there is a risk of the dog not learning to make a connection between its own barking and the discomfort of the collar.  That would completely miss the point of a bark collar in the first place.

The material of this collar is also a bit abrasive and might irritate the skin, especially of dogs with short hair.

Digity Dogs No Bark Collar

Again, this was a difficult choice to leave out.  Just as with the example above, it is definitely not a bad collar.  It is also very popular and might even work very well for you.

The Digity Dogs No Bark Collar is specially programmed to teach your dog not to bark in the minimum amount of time. It tends to respond to barks only a tone at first.  As the dog barks again the level of the tones increases until it starts emitting mild static shocks., the first 2 barks, then tones followed by progressively stronger, but short, harmless static shocks if the dog continues barking. The idea is that the dog eventually stops barking when it hears the tone, so before the static shock actually comes.

The problem with this collar is that so many customers experience a lot of difficulty when fitting their dogs with the collar.  It is not very easy to use or to adjust, especially if your dog is very active or excitable.

The other thing is the way it looks.  This is one of those products that are not very neutral looking.  The bright blue collar really sticks out.  If you don’t like the color on your dog, there is unfortunately nothing you can do about it.

Our pick for the Best Bark Collar 2017

Our editor’s choice for the number one best Bark Collar for dogs is theSportDOG Brand NoBark 10R.

The reason this one came out on top is quite simple.  It is just really good at doing what it is supposed to do.  It has very good technology that can even be used for some more advanced dog training techniques.  It is called Perfect Bark Technology, and you can read more about it in our review below.

It has 10 levels of static stimulation to be able to cater for different sizes and temperaments of dogs.  This is an incredibly important feature in our eyes, since we want something that is very effective but that does not in any way hurt the dog.

The collar is also water proof, which is great for sport dogs, as well as for dogs that live in places with a lot of rain.  The waterproof feature is also linked to the fact that the collar is generally quite tough and durable.

The reviews

We spent a lot of time researching all that the bark collar market has to offer.  The following list should help you become better acquainted with some of the best and most trusted bark collars available today.  We tried to include collars that cater to every kind of size and temperament of dog.  We also tried to include collar options that suit every kind of budget.  We know that it is important to you to find something that is gentle but effective, so that was our main criteria.

The idea is that this will give you more than enough information to settle on the absolute perfect bark collar for your overly talkative best friend.

Best Bark Collar #1: SportDOG 10R NoBark Rechargeable Bark Control Collar

The SportDOG SBC-10R NoBark collar has more advanced training technology than most other bark collars on the market today.  It enables your dog to set the pace of their own training and ensures that there is no over-correction.  Over correction is what happens when your dog gets a shock (for example) from other noises and then learns to change its behavior beyond just the barking problem.

This is one of the only collars that specifically prevents this from happening by getting your dog’s attention and interrupt their barking pattern, instead of just outright punishing the dog.

You can select from Temperament Learning, Progressing Correction, or User-Selected Correction modes, which lets you adjust the intensity and strictness of your dog training regime.

The PerfectBark technology that we mentioned earlier provides firm, fair and consistent bark control.  It uses both vibration and sound to get the dogs attention.   The automatic safety shut-off eliminates the risk of over-correction.

One of the best collars out there today, and definitely our personal favorite.  This is a good quality, durable collar with advanced technology that definitely works.  For all that you get with this collar, the price is also very good!

  • Waterproof
  • Adjustment settings to cater for all dog sizes and temperaments.
  • High quality materials that will last long.
  • Rechargeable battery
  • The high-tech design might not be everyone’s idea of a good looking collar.
  • The price might be a bit high for some customers.
  • Some issues with the company’s guarantee policy.

Best Bark Collar #2: PetSafe Elite Little Dog Bark Collar

The PetSafe Elite Little Dog Bark Collar uses a combination of deterring technologies to help your dog to stop its barking.  It uses vibration as well as sound to gently correct the barking behavior.

As a bark is detected the dog will receive a safe but still quite uncomfortable static shock. The intensity increases if the dog keeps barking, but stops as soon as the dog keeps quiet.  The idea behind the increasing intensity technology is that the dog learns to stop barking before it becomes uncomfortable.

This model is also specifically designed with little dogs in mind.  The collar itself is small and the levels of the static shocks are appropriate for smaller dogs.

For the style conscious among our readers, this collar comes in a variety of different colors.  So you can choose just the right one for your dog’s specific needs.

This is a well-made, high quality dog collar that is specifically designed for smaller dogs.  The collar is water resistant and comes in a variety of different colors.

  • Specifically made for little dogs. (there is also a version for larger breeds)
  • Uses both sound and static technology.
  • 10 Adjustable levels of static intensity.
  • Some cases of dogs getting hurt from the collar.
  • One of the more expensive collars
  • Batteries are expensive and not rechargeable.

Best Bark Collar #3: Dogtra YS-600 Yapper Stopper

This is the newest collar from Dogtra.  Their newest and best collar to date.  All of the newest technologies, but with a lot of improvements from their previous models.

The YS-600 comes with a fully rechargeable battery, which makes the collar a bit more expensive initially, but saves you some money in the long run.

After 30 seconds of silence (when the dog stopped barking) the collar automatically starts recharging.  This is some of the most efficient technology that helps the collar last much longer.

The collar is also entirely waterproof, which means that it is a perfect product for active or sports dogs.  With the full year warranty in place, you get to test the product out and make sure it works well without risking losing your money.

  • Rechargeable batteries
  • Totally waterproof.
  • Shock and Sound technology
  • Expensive option.
  • Can be heavy on smaller dogs.
  • Only comes in black.

Best Bark Collar #4: PetSafe Gentle Spray Bark Collar

Unlike the other collars we have looked at so far, this one works with spray technology.  No sound or shock with this collar.  Only a gentle spray of citronella to make your dog stop barking.

When the spray runs out, you can simply buy a refill canister.  It is really easy to use, and if it is effective it will be one of the cheapest ways to address a barking problem.

The collar is also fully water resistant, which means that you can easily use it for outside training.  It is important to take note that this collar is designed specifically for dogs that weigh over 6 pounds.  Smaller dogs might find the citronella discharge overpowering.

The GentleSpray Anti-Bark Collar is a great way to stop excessive barking in a very gentle way.  It is a good choice for anyone who has a dog that might scare easily and who or that does not respond well to the other static technologies.

  • Gentler training method than the static shock.
  • Citronella can be refilled.
  • Relatively affordable compared to some other training collars.
  • Citronella is not effective on all dogs
  • The design of the collar is not that nice looking.
  • The citronella might affect the general smell of your home.

Best Bark Collar #5: Dogtra YS500

Another model in the YS series.  They are all good collars, and have a longstanding reputation with their loyal customers.

The collar activates only by picking up on the vibration of the dog’s vocal cords.  This is to avoid the activation overreacting and shocking the dog for no reason, which could result in trauma for the dog.

It also contains a convenient dial that allows you to control the intensity level and set it to something that is appropriate to the size of your dog.

This is a good middle-of-the-road option.  It is much more affordable than some of the other models available, but it is still a good collar.  Effective for dogs of different sizes thanks to the adjustable shock feature.

  • Affordable shock collar
  • Rechargeable batteries.
  • LED light display
  • Hurts some dogs.
  • Some customers have reported the collar to be ineffective. Luckily it comes with a warrantee.
  • Only comes in black.

Best Bark Collar #6: Dogtra YS 300

Just like with the other Dogtra collars, the YS 300 specifically becomes activated when the dog barks, which limits the chance of the device being activated by outside sounds.

The collar has 7 levels of intensity.  So you can adjust it to a level that is suitable for the size and temperament of your dog.

Non-electrical stimulation vibration warning prior to the stimulation, so the dog will eventually be able to recognize the warning and stop before it encounters any kind of actual pain or discomfort.

The adjustment settings of the size, as well as the intensity settings of the vibrations meant that this collar is even suitable for very small dogs.

The YS300, is a well-made and very affordable collar that will fit almost any dog.  It is versatile and easy to use on most dogs.  The collar is water resistant, but not submersible.

  • Water resistant
  • Affordable
  • Versatile and suitable to most breeds of dogs
  • The collar might, in some cases, be too weak for larger dogs to use.
  • Basic design that may not be appealing to some dog owners.
  • Rechargeable batteries are expensive to replace.

Best Bark Collar #7: Garmin BarkLimiter Deluxe Dog Training Device

This is Garmin’s newer version of the rechargeable Tri-tronics Bark Limiter G3, and remains one of our most effective bark collars.  It might be slightly more expensive than some other options, but it is definitely effective.

A useful feature of this model is that it can tell you how many times your dog barked while you were alone.  This way you get to monitor your dog’s progress towards barking less even when you are not around to see how much the dog barks.

Great for people who want to determine how much your dog is bothering the neighbors while you are away.

Excellent collar for those who can afford it.  This type of technology really lets you engage with your dog’s progress.  It has different intensity settings in order to accommodate dogs of different breeds and sizes.

  • Advanced anti-bark technology
  • Rechargeable batteries
  • Useful on dogs of almost all sizes
  • Expensive
  • Some customers have reported having some difficulty with using the device.
  • Reports of dogs being unsettled by the size and weight of the collar around their necks.

Best Bark Collar #8: Garmin Delta Sport

Another one of Garmin’s high end collars.  It comes with advanced technology that really helps you to have a hands on approach to training your dog to bark less.

The collar comes with a remote control that you can use to train your dog for other tasks beyond just barking.  It is definitely for the more hands-on dog trainers out there, who want to be more serious about teaching their dogs all kinds of new tricks.

The handheld device is very user friendly, and can handle up to three dogs, with a range of up to one mile.

This is almost an entire dog training system, more than just a collar.  It definitely serves its purpose as a bark collar, but it can go beyond that.  This is therefore an excellent choice for dog trainers and regular owners who can afford it.

  • The remote control has a wide range (almost a mile)
  • Contains multiple training options
  • You can use this on up to 3 dogs simultaneously
  • The interface can be confusing to people who are not very good with technology
  • This is a very expensive option.

Best Bark Collar #9: SportDOG SportHunter A-Series 1825 1 Mile Dog Remote Trainer

This is another option that can be used on multiple dogs at the same time.  It is expandable up to 6 dogs with purchase of additional SDR-A Add-A-Dog Collars.

Just like the previous entry, this is also a collar that is best suited for people who want to do some serious dog training beyond simple bark reduction.

The device is fully waterproof and therefore easy to use in outside training situations.

The SportHunter 1825 has an adjustable interface where you can adjust the level of the static shock to something appropriate to the dog that you are training.

High quality training system that can serve a purpose beyond simple bark training.  It might be more expensive than some other models, but if you can afford it, it might be one of the better options available out there.

  • 1 Mile radius on the remote control.
  • Waterproof for outside training.
  • Rechargeable batteries
  • Very expensive.
  • For advanced trainers, not necessarily for amateurs.

Best Bark Collar #10: PetSafe Yard & Park Rechargeable Dog Training Collar

This is a rechargeable waterproof collar that is even submersible up to 5 feet.  It is the perfect collar for any kind of outdoor training.

It can be used to train up to 3 extra dogs with the same interface.  It is, however made specifically with dogs over 8 pounds in mind.  It fits neck sizes up to 28″, which is mostly larger sports dogs.

This model has some of the newest static technology that is extra gentle on dogs while still being very effective for training

  • High quality
  • Gentle but effective static technology
  • Waterproof
  • Expensive.
  • Not suitable for smaller dogs.
  • Not suitable for amateur users.

How we chose the best Bark Collar for your dog:

It does not take long for our dogs to become parts of our families!  Unfortunately, sometimes there can be some problems with barking.  Especially if you live in a small apartment or if your dog is depriving you of some sleep.  The idea of a good bark collar is to find a humane solution to your barking problem.

The ideal thing would be to find something that will look good on your dog, feels comfortable on its skin and that stops the dog from barking.

We selected the collars in our list by keeping all of these things in mind.  All of the collars that are included on here make use of technology that will not harm your dog.  It is all effective, without being harmful in any way.

We also focused on materials that are gentle or neutral on dog’s skin.  Unless your dog has a specific allergic reaction, we included mostly materials that will not cause any irritations.

The following list of criteria is what guided our food choices to ensure that you get the absolute best bark collar for your dog!

  • Style

We looked specifically at styles of collars that are comfortable for most dogs.  We did not consider any invasive types of collars that might hurt your dog, or that stops dogs from barking by causing them any kind of serious pain.  We mainly focused on harnesses and choker style collars.

  • Material

Certain materials tend to irritate dogs’ skin.  We tried to focus on material that is gentle on dogs’ skins.  However, every dog is different.  Therefore, we included a number of different options so that you will be able to find the collar with material that will work for your dog.

  • What we avoided?

We strictly avoided all collars that might hurt your dog.  We did not want to include anything that might cause distress or pain to any animal.  The idea behind these collars is that they gently dissuade your dog from barking without inflicting any real pain.  The shock collars emit a very light static discharge that frightens the dog more than it hurts it.  The same goes for the sound and smell/taste technology collars.

  • Price

We had to consider the financial situation of all potential buyers.  Our goal was to include options for all types of people.  We have cheaper options available on our list, but they are still excellent brands that will not do your puppy any harm whatsoever.  Every dog deserves a happy, healthy meal without you having to go into debt for it!

  • Convenience

Some collars can be very complicated to put on.  That is why we tried to make sure that we included collars that are very easy to manage.  That goes for putting it on, taking it off, and cleaning it.

  • Temperament

Due to all the different types of dog personalities that exist out there, we wanted to make sure that we have enough of a variation to cater for these personalities.  Some dogs, for example, are very sensitive to sounds and might be very frightened by the sonic collars.  We never want to traumatize any dogs, so the variety caters for the different sensitivities and temperaments of different dogs.

  • Taste

The truth is that collars are fashion for dogs.  In most cases it is the closest thing your dog will have to actually wearing clothes.  That is why it is important that you get a collar that looks good on your dog, as well as one that feels comfortable for the dog.  We tried to include a range of collars that cater to different taste in dog owners.  There should be something for everyone on here.

  • Size

This is one of those considerations that is especially important with bark collars.  Since the collars all work with a particular deterrent technology, you need to make sure that the discomfort of the deterrent is appropriate to the size of your dog.  When we put together our list of collars and reviews we tried to include bark collars that would work for different sized dogs.  A small Chihuahua and a large Pit Bull would definitely not need the same shock setting on their respective bark collars.

  • Skin allergies

Since a collar is something that your dog will be wearing almost all of the time, it has to be gentle on the dog’s skin around his neck area.  Some dogs are allergic to certain types of materials.  That is why we included a number of different kinds of materials.  This way, if you know that your dog is allergic to something like nylon, you can just focus on the cotton based collars.

  • Dog coat

A short haired dog naturally has different needs from a shaggy dog.  That is why we included collars of different widths.  Dogs with very short hair tend to look better in thin collars while long and shaggy haired dogs definitely need bulkier looking collars that won’t get tangled in with their coats.

Best Bark Collar – Wrapping it up.

We really hope that this list and our reviews help you to make an informed choice when it comes to the next bark collar you buy for your dog.  Dogs are family and they deserve only the best we have to offer them.

The market is saturated with hundreds of options; this makes it quite tricky to establish if you are buying the right thing.  We hope that this list, as well as our reviews helped you to get some clarity on the matter.

Despite the love we have for our dogs, we all know how bad a barking problem can become.  The important thing is to find a solution to the barking problem that will be kind to your dog, but still effective.  It will improve your relationship with your puppy AND with your neighbors.
